RESOLUTION OIV-ECO 697-2023

UPDATE OF THE INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR WINE LABELLING: VINTAGE OR HARVEST YEAR

WARNING: this resolution amends the following resolution:

-          ECO 1/88 “List of optional indications for wine labelling”

IN VIEW of the article 2, paragraph 2 iii of the Agreement of 3rd April 2001, establishing the International Organisation of Vine and Wine,

CONSIDERING the decision of Executive Committee of April 2017 regarding the necessity to update the International Standard for Wine Labelling,

CONSIDERING the works conducted by the expert group DROCON on revision of the OIV International Standard for labelling of wines,

CONSIDERING the need to update the required conditions for labelling vintage and gravest year and to improve the quality of information communicated to consumers

ON THE PROPOSAL of the Commission Economy and Law,

DECIDES to introduce the following modifications to the International Standard for Labelling of wine and to replace the Article 3.1.5 “Vintage and harvest year” by the following text:

“To bear this mention the wines must be made from at least 85% grapes coming from the year shown.”

To bear this mention the wines must be made with grapes coming 100% from the year shown.

Nevertheless, with special dispensation, the producer States can lower this percentage to 85%, in the case where this practice is traditional and customary.
