New initiative from the OIV promotes dialogue and gathers strategic input on key challenges for vine and wine.
The first SCOPE (Stakeholders Contribution on OIV Priorities and Engagement) Forum was held on 20–21 October in Dijon, France. Opened by OECD Secretary General Mathias Corman, the SCOPE Forum brought together 150 participants including OIV members and experts, representatives of private sector, policy makers and international organisations to share perspectives on sustainability, trade and culture and the role of the OIV in these areas.
OIV Director General John Barker welcomed the success of the SCOPE Forum:
“The SCOPE Forum is a new initiative designed to connect stakeholders at all levels and promote dialogue within the OIV’s mandate as the global reference for vine and wine. I was delighted with the very high level of engagement and the deep insights that were shared. For me, this emphasised the importance of cooperation and scientific and technical knowledge-sharing to progress our common interests in the vine and wine sector.”
Some of the points of convergence from the meeting
On the theme of “Sustainability”:
- The importance of promoting sustainable production strategies across all three pillars: environmental, economic, and social.
- The multiplicity of different programmes, stakeholders and requirements around sustainability that can give rise to unnecessary costs for producers and lack of clarity for consumers
- The potential for the OIV and its sustainability principles and guidelines to stand as a common reference point for future equivalence initiatives across sustainability initiatives
On the theme of “Trade”:
- The essential role of international trade to the future of the vine and wine sector, and the impacts of uncertainty in the global trade environment
- The challenges facing the multilateral rules-based system and the need for continued support as well as reform
- The ongoing significance of non-tariff measures, including labelling and certification rules
- The contribution of the OIV alongside WTO and others in promoting transparency and in harmonisation
On the theme of “Culture”:
- The value of vine and wine culture as both an asset created over millennia and as the context for present and future wine consumption
- The multiple dimensions and functions of vine and wine culture
- The opportunities for the OIV to coordinate recognition and understanding of vine and wine culture through definitions, methodologies or working with UNESCO
