Generally speaking, the American Diabetes Association recommends that fasting plasma glucose (FPG) be less than 100 mg/dL for non-diabetic individuals.

Maintaining a stable blood sugar range requires monitoring techniques to track fluctuations in your levels throughout the day. Using a glucometer or continuous glucose monitor (CGM) can help you identify patterns and adjust your diet, exercise routine, and medication regimen as needed. For example, if you notice that your blood sugar levels tend to spike after meals containing high amounts of carbohydrates, adjusting portion sizes or incorporating more protein-rich foods may help stabilize them.

The Impact of Lifestyle Factors on Blood Sugar Range

Lifestyle factors play a significant role in regulating blood sugar levels. Diet and exercise are perhaps the most influential components, as they directly impact insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in cells. For instance, regular physical activity has been shown to enhance insulin action by increasing muscle mass and reducing fat stores (1). Similarly, consuming foods rich in fiber such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes can slow down carbohydrate digestion and absorption.

On the other hand, certain lifestyle habits can have detrimental effects on blood sugar range. Stress is a prime example of this phenomenon; chronic stress leads to increased cortisol production which indirectly elevates glucose levels by promoting gluconeogenesis (2). Poor sleep quality also plays a significant role in disrupting insulin sensitivity and raising blood pressure, both of which are critical for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.

Stabilizing Blood Sugar with Food Choices

The types of food we consume have a profound impact on our overall health, particularly when it comes to managing blood sugar range. Incorporating more protein-rich foods like lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, and legumes can help regulate appetite hormones such as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) which stimulate glucose uptake in cells.

Furthermore, incorporating healthy fats into our diet can enhance fat digestion and reduce carbohydrate absorption rates; these include avocados, nuts seeds like almonds walnuts flaxseeds chia seeds olive oil avocado. Whole grains including quinoa brown rice wild salmon sardines are rich sources of fiber vitamins minerals potassium selenium calcium iron magnesium.

The Role of Supplements in Maintaining a Healthy Blood Sugar Range

While dietary modifications and regular exercise can significantly impact blood sugar regulation, supplementing with the right nutrients may also provide additional benefits for maintaining healthy levels.
