When it comes to blood sugar levels, anything below 100 is considered low. However, having a reading as low as 70 can be cause for concern and requires immediate attention.
Maintaining an optimal range is crucial for overall health. The ideal blood sugar range varies from person to person but generally falls between 80-130 mg/dL before meals and less than 180 mg/dL after meals (1).
A stable blood sugar level not only keeps the body's energy levels up, but it also helps prevent potential complications like heart disease and nerve damage.
Common Causes of Low Blood Sugar
One of the most common causes of low blood sugar is skipping or delaying meals. When you don't eat regularly, your body may not have enough glucose in the bloodstream to keep blood sugar levels stable (2). Additionally, certain medications such as diuretics can increase urination and cause blood sugar levels to drop.
Low insulin levels can also be a contributing factor to low blood sugar readings. Insulin is responsible for regulating glucose uptake by cells; without it, your body may not have the necessary mechanisms in place to regulate its own energy production (3).
The Impact of Low Blood Sugar
Having consistently low blood sugar readings over time can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and irritability. If left unmanaged, low blood sugar levels can cause more severe health issues like seizures or even loss of consciousness.
It's also worth noting that people with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to hypoglycemic episodes due to the absence of insulin production in their bodies (4). Individuals using insulin injections need to take careful note of their dosages and keep an emergency supply on hand.
Strategies for Stabilizing Low Blood Sugar
Fortunately, stabilizing low blood sugar levels can be achieved with a few simple lifestyle modifications. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day helps maintain energy levels and prevent dips in glucose (5).
Another effective strategy is to choose carbohydrate-rich snacks that contain fiber and protein. These types of foods are digested more slowly, keeping your body's insulin needs stable for longer periods.
Additionally, exercising regularly can improve insulin sensitivity; this allows cells to take up glucose more efficiently, reducing blood sugar fluctuations (6). Even activities like taking a short walk after meals can make a difference in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.
