OIV General form the description of vine varieties (Vitis spp.)

RESOLUTION OIV-VITI 467-2012

OIV GENERAL FORM FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF VINE VARIETIES (Vitis spp.)

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

According to the proposal of the ‘Viticulture’ Commission,

IN VIEW OF the works presented in the ‘Genetic resources and vine selection’ expert group in recent years and, particularly, since 2007,

CONSIDERING the need to update the official OIV Publication ‘Description of wine and grape varieties throughout the world’,

CONSIDERING the adoption of the new ‘Code of ampelographic descriptors’ in 2007 (Resolution VITI 2/2007),

CONSIDERING the need to create a reference database for each vine variety,

CONSIDERING the large number of recently published scientific works regarding analysis and the genetic diversity of vines,

WHEREAS there is, around the world, a number of already established ampelographic, isoenzymatic and bio-molecular parameters,

DECIDES to adopt the ‘OIV General form for the description of vine varieties (Vitis spp.)’ and

RECOMMENDS that Member States use this form for sending official descriptions to the OIV.

OIV GENERAL FORM FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF VINE VARIETIES (Vitis spp.)

Objective

The OIV wants to put together a global reference with regards descriptions of vine varieties. Based on the standardised descriptors (OIV Code of ampelographic descriptors, 2007), the purpose of these descriptions will be to provide the simple description of a given vine variety, from a competent institution in the Member State concerned.

Structure of the form

The form consists of two pages, one ‘principal’ and one ‘supplementary’. Their separation is functional for data presentation reasons. The structure of the form is provided in the Appendix. There is no minimum number of characteristics to be described, but it is preferable that the ‘principal’ page rather than the ‘supplementary’ page is completed.

Priority primary descriptors list

As a reminder, for a quick characterisation of varieties, the Genres CT 96 No81 partners compiled a ‘Priority Primary Descriptors List’ which was ratified by the OIV. This list features 14 priority primary descriptors, selected for their ability to distinguish easily between different varieties. Most of these are easy to grade:
