OIV RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT THE USE OF ALTERNATIVES TO SULPHITES AND OTHER PRESERVATIVES FOR TABLE AND DRIED GRAPES PRODUCTION

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

At the proposal of Commission I « Viticulture » and the Sub-commission “Table grapes, raisins and unfermented vine products”,

IN VIEW of article 2, paragraph 2 b f) of the Agreement of 3 April 2001, establishing the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, and under the axe 1 of the OIV Strategic Plan 2015-2019, which foresees to ” Promote a sustainable vitiviniculture”,

CONSIDERING the economic importance of the use of grape and its unfermented products that represents almost half of the world total grape production,

CONSIDERING the progress achieved by the works developed within the « Table grapes, raisins and unfermented vine products » sub commission, which have been lately concentrated around the alternatives to sulfur dioxide (SO2) in table grape production, either in the vineyard, or at the post-harvest level.

CONSIDERING the OIV expertise’s document “Alternatives to SO2 for Table and Dried Grapes” published in 2017 and continuously updated, in order to reduce or limit the use of SO2 in table grapes production and dried grapes,

CONSIDERING Resolution OIV-VITI 422-2011 on SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE TABLE AND DRIED GRAPE SECTOR, and especially the parts concerning specific information on the sustainable alternatives for the inputs of the production of table grapes,

CONSIDERING the results of the large number of recently published scientific works focusing on the alternatives to preservatives, mainly the use of SO2 and related chemicals

DECIDES:

  • To encourage the research and study the uses of biocontrol agents, natural antimicrobials vegetal extracts, sustainable decontaminating agents or physical treatments and agronomic solutions.
