Revison of the maximum limit of arsenic in wine

RESOLUTION OIV-SECSAN 701-2022

REVISION OF THE MAXIMUM LIMIT OF ARSENIC IN WINE

WARNING: This resolution amends the following resolutions:
- AG 11/67-OEN

- AG 2/53-OEN

IN VIEW of the article 2 paragraph iv of the Agreement of 3rd April 2001 establishing the International Organisation of Vine and Wine,

ON THE PROPOSAL of the " Food Safety " Expert group,

IN VIEW of the Resolution OENO 11/1967 which establishes the limits for Arsenic,

CONSIDERING the works of the Food Safety Expert group, and especially the collective expertise document on “Arsenic and wine: a review” published in 2021,

CONSIDERING the evaluation from the JECFA, specifically the new toxicological evaluation of Arsenic in food,

DECIDES, on the proposal of Commission IV " Safety and Health", to amend Part B of the Resolution OENO 11/1967 regarding the Arsenic limit of 0.2 mg/L specifically,

DECIDES to replace in all relevant OIV documents the existing Arsenic limit with the following:

* 0.1 mg/L for wine made, starting from the 2023 harvest year,

ENCOURAGES the member states to disseminate pertinent information as widely as possible in order to maintain Arsenic contents at the technologically lowest possible levels.
