Exactly one year after the publication of the first resolution in this series, we conclude with a focus on the core of the OIV’s priorities: consumer health protection. Responsible communication about wine consumption is essential. Discover the OIV's key recommendations in the OIV-SECSAN 679-2022 resolution.

Adopted at the General Assembly of the 43rd OIV Congress in Mexico in 2022, Resolution OIV-SECSAN 679-2022, “Recommendations on the Dissemination of Information on Wine,” encourages further research into the relationship between wine and health, as well as its perception within the context of healthy diets. It offers guidelines for Member States and stakeholders to ensure that communication about wine consumption is balanced and scientifically grounded. The goal is to protect consumer health while enabling informed decision-making.
The OIV's commitment
Resolution OIV-SECSAN 679-2022 reflects the OIV's ongoing commitment to informing Member States and stakeholders about measures to help protect consumer health and contribute to food safety. The resolution also emphasises the importance of gathering, processing, and disseminating accurate information, taking into account the risks of binge drinking and the varying effects based on consumption patterns.
The OIV engages with Member States to develop and communicate information on scientific research on health and nutritional aspects of wine and grape products taking into account the social context of consumption.. This includes monitoring key research on the links between wine, grapes, and health—particularly the role of phenolic compounds in health—while promoting risk reduction associated with harmful alcohol consumption, consumption behaviour and the assessment and dissemination of scientific information. The topic is also covered in the OIV 2025-2030 strategic plan, which emphasises promoting an understanding of the relationship between consumption of vitivinicultural products and health.
Resolution OIV-SECSAN 679-2022 recommends that communication directed to wine consumers should include:
- Information on the risks associated with harmful alcohol consumption beyond national drinking guidelines;
- Tailored information for at-risk groups, such as pregnant or lactating women;
- Actionable advice to mitigate risks, such as limiting consumption to mealtimes and alternating with water; and
- Drinking limits based on national guidelines.
