Description

To observe under conditions favourable to Phomopsis cane and leaf spot (Diaporthe ampelina), during pre-flowering and pre-veraison stages. Examination of the amount and size of the lesions/necrosis on the shoots. Symptoms: brown necrosis on the shoots that feel like a chocolate bar; pycnidia may be present on the necrosis. Possible confusions: downy mildew, weed killer phytotoxicity. 1 = Most of the shoots covered by brown, deep, and extensive necrotic lesions on the first 6-8 internodes, cortical whitening of the undamaged cortex. 3 = Almost all shoots/woody shoots with evident and widespread necrosis on the basal internodes. 5 = Slightly marked lesions on part of the basal internodes of some shoots. 7 = Small necrosis at the base of some shoots. 9 = No visible symptoms.
