RESOLUTION OENO-ECO 1/94

LIQUEUR WINES

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

BASED ON the joint proposai of Commission II “Enology ”and Commission III “Vitiuinicultural Economies ”following the 24th OIV “International Symposium on Liqueur Wines and Sweet Wines ” (Greece 31 May to 5 June, 1993),

CONSIDERING the diuersity of liqueur wines which ought not to be confused with naturally sweet wines, considering however the exclusiuely uiticultural nature of these products,

CONSIDERING the interest that various catégories of consumers have in liqueur wines, as function of their spécifie characteristics,

RECOGNISES:

  • that it is appropriate to set forth the OIV définition of liqueur wines to take the diuersity into account by recognising the customary practises linked to the origin,
  • that it is appropriate to establish a définition for natural sweet wines to auoid a regrettable con fusion between these wines and liqueur wines, naturally sweet wines also being part of the vitiuinicultural héritage of certain countries from the remotest time,
  • that it is appropriate that these studies are accomplished in the near future corresponding to the spirit of the Olympia Symposium (Greece 31 May- June, 1993),
  • that there is good reason to emphasize the interest in consumer information and in profes- sional éducation principally in order to auert ail risk of confusion in the minds of the consumers and to create conditions for fair compétition,
  • that there is good reason to establish labeling rules for liqueur wines.
