The OIV reaffirms the importance of cooperation and science at the 23rd Giesco

11 Aug 2025

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine participated in the 23rd GiESCO Conference, one of the most prominent global gatherings of scientists, viticulturists, and sector leaders.

Held under the OIV’s patronage from 27 to 31 July 2025, the event was hosted by Hochschule Geisenheim University (Germany) and brought together 350 experts from 23 countries to address urgent and emerging issues in viticulture under the theme “Above and Below – Towards the Future.”

In the conference’s opening speech, OIV Director General John Barker underlined that “cooperation and science are at the heart of the OIV’s activities.” According to Barker, “at this crucial moment for the vine and wine sector worldwide, they are needed more than ever.” This statement reflects the conference’s core mission: bringing together the world’s leading minds to exchange knowledge and propose actionable solutions for a changing viticultural landscape.

With the sector facing mounting pressure from climate change, shifting consumer preferences, and increasing geopolitical and trade uncertainties, this year’s conference emphasised the importance of science-based innovation and international cooperation in shaping the future of vine and wine.

In this context, OIV Head of Unit for Viticulture, Enrico Battiston, presented the Organisation’s new Strategic Plan. Battiston outlined six strategic priorities aimed at guiding global efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable viticulture sector, reaffirming the OIV’s commitment to supporting innovation across both scientific and practical domains.

Overall, the scientific programme of the 23rd GiESCO featured an impressive line-up, including 10 keynote addresses, more than 100 short presentations and 170 scientific posters.

Since 2003, the OIV has supported GiESCO as one of the leading international platforms for advancing viticultural knowledge and cooperation.
